Rational choice: Rational choice in economics is the idea that individuals make decisions by weighing the costs and benefits of each option and choosing the option that they believe will maximize their own utility. Rational choice theory is based on the assumption that individuals are rational actors who are motivated by self-interest. Mause I 66 Rational Choice/Democratic Theory/Tullock/Buchanan/TullockVsDowns/BuchanananVsDowns: The second decisive impulse for the theorization of Rational Choice came from the work of Tullock, in particular from the Calculus of Consent (Buchanan and Tullock 1962 (1)), published in 1962, which discusses democratic-theoretical and justice-theoretical considerations at a mathematically-formalized level that is far superior to that of Downs and which already anticipates certain considerations. >A.
